  • This course offers students an opportunity to study specific topics in biology in depth and the opportunity to conduct independent, original research in biology. A large portion of class will be spent in nearby forests, fields, marshes and streams as well as in the laboratory. The course begins with an introduction to the scientific method and the process of research through a structured field study. Students will complete all aspects of the study from data collection to research report. The study will include an introduction to basic statistics and data analysis and be finished with a science research paper. This project will introduce the process by which students will design an independent research study that will run the remainder of the year. The introduction to biology research will be complemented for the remainder of the year by focused study of major themes in biology from the molecular to the ecosystem level. This course is taught at the beginning college level with expectations based accordingly.

  • We hear reference to “the Middle East” almost every day in the news. The war in Iraq, Israel/Palestine, terrorism, fanaticism, fundamentalism, or oil might also be the focus. As a result, the phrase, “the Middle East,” has come to be associated with a myriad of complex, sometimes mysterious images. Especially since September 11, 2001, these images can be frightening.

The goal of this course is to help students unravel the flood of information about the Middle East available to them, and to develop the critical thinking and reading skills necessary to understand events in the region more fully. The course is also designed to encourage the formation of opinions about US government policies relating to the Middle East, and to provide opportunities for the written expression of these opinions.
